We have the privilege of interviewing George Agathangelou, COO at IPMB, the gold acquisition platform in the world setting a new standard in global digital payments.
George Agathangelou has served most of his career as an executive for Cyprus Investment Firms and is a holder of CySEC professional competence certificate. With over 16 years of experience in regulated financial markets and a decade of experience in Bitcoin, as an international public speaker, George has delivered presentations on DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) and blockchain in numerous countries.
George holds a MSc in Digital Currencies and Blockchain Technology (Cum Laude), an MBA and a BA in Economics. His experience across the board in Distributed Ledger Technologies, Virtual Asset Service Providers’ services, DeFi (Decentralized Finance), Asset Tokenization, Metaverse, Web3, NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) will prove invaluable as the ecosystem grows across different platforms.
1. What is the role of gold in Web3?
George: Gold plays a foundational role in the Web3 space by offering a bridge between physical assets and digital economies. Here’s how it integrates into Web3 specifically:
- Tokenization of Physical Gold: Gold is tokenized on the blockchain, which means physical gold assets can be represented as digital tokens. These tokens can be owned, transferred, and traded on decentralized platforms, making gold more accessible to investors globally. Platforms like IPMB focus on tokenizing gold to merge its stability with the flexibility of Web3, enabling fractional ownership and easier liquidity.
- Wealth Preservation: Gold has long been a safe-haven asset, known for retaining its value even during economic downturns. In Web3, where volatility is common, gold-backed tokens can provide stability, serving as a store of value and hedging tool for crypto portfolios.
- Decentralized Finance (DeFi) and Gold-Backed Loans: Tokenized gold can be used as collateral in DeFi platforms, enabling users to access loans and liquidity without liquidating their digital assets. This model gives gold a new utility, transforming it from a purely physical investment to a collateralizable asset within decentralized ecosystems.
- Transparency and Security: Blockchain offers transparency and verifiability, addressing trust issues traditionally associated with gold storage and custody. Platforms using blockchain for gold ownership can provide third-party physical verifications regarding proof of reserves and traceability, which enhances security and user trust.
- Global Access and Fractional Ownership: By converting gold into blockchain-based tokens, people worldwide can invest in gold without dealing with physical logistics. This democratisation is crucial in Web3’s mission to remove traditional financial barriers and bring access to broader markets.
Gold’s role in Web3, especially as envisioned by companies like IPMB, allows it to combine its historical value as a stable asset with the agility and accessibility of blockchain technology.
2. Could you share the inspiration and journey behind founding IPMB? What core problem/s and opportunities did you see in the blockchain or crypto space that IPMB aims to address?
George: The inspiration behind founding IPMB stemmed from a vision to merge the timeless value of gold with the transformative power of blockchain technology. At its core, IPMB saw a critical opportunity to address several major pain points in both traditional gold investment and the crypto space:
1. Access and Ownership of Gold:
Traditionally, gold ownership is limited by logistics, storage, and high entry costs, creating barriers to access for everyday investors. IPMB recognized that tokenizing gold on the blockchain could democratise gold ownership, allowing for fractionalized investments. This approach allows individuals to own portions of high-value physical assets, removing the need for large, upfront investments and the burden of storage.
2. Transparency, Trust and Lowering Fees in the Gold Market:
Trust has been a long-standing challenge in gold investment due to questions about gold custody, authenticity, and value. By leveraging blockchain’s immutable and transparent ledger, IPMB addresses these trust issues by providing proof of reserves and verifiable ownership, giving investors confidence in the backing of their assets.
One of IPMBs key value components is our full vertical integration of the gold supply chain onto the blockchain. IPMB Group holds shares in gold mines and works closely with smelters and refineries to obtain gold below the market rate, this gives us 2 major competitive advantages.
- Full Traceability: A large problem is the gold industry is illicit sourcing of gold which then passes through european refineries all the way into leading banks. With IPMB we provide full traceability and maintain commitments to ethical mining practices which we can showcase and guarantee on-chain by tracking and recording the journey of gold from the mine to the vault, and into the cloud by utilising the full supply chain we operate.
- Cost Savings: IPMB saves funds by disintermediation of the gold supply chain – operating this ourselves, rather than purchasing gold from other suppliers – this core benefit allows us to provide fee-free products for our token holders increasing the value proposition of our digital assets.
This transparency in gold custody and auditing was a gap IPMB sought to fill, blending transparency with security.
3. Stability in Volatile Markets:
Blockchain and crypto markets are often marked by high volatility, which can make them unpredictable. IPMB identified an opportunity to bring stability by backing digital assets with a stable, universally valuable commodity—gold. This approach not only makes digital assets less volatile but also enhances their utility in areas like decentralized finance (DeFi), where they can be used as collateral for loans or as a store of value.
4. Liquidity and Usability:
A key issue with physical gold is its illiquidity—it’s difficult to buy, sell, or leverage gold quickly without significant fees or logistical challenges. By creating gold-backed tokens on the blockchain, IPMB offers a new level of liquidity, where investors can easily trade or leverage their holdings on blockchain platforms without needing to handle physical assets.
5. Global Accessibility and Financial Inclusion:
IPMB was also inspired by the opportunity to enhance financial inclusion globally. Tokenizing gold allows investors from various regions to participate in the gold market without needing access to traditional gold markets or financial infrastructure. This aligns with Web3’s mission of democratising access to assets and wealth-building opportunities.
Vision for IPMB:
In establishing IPMB, the founders envisioned a platform that would seamlessly integrate the reliability of traditional assets like gold with the innovative, borderless, and transparent characteristics of blockchain technology. Their goal was to provide assets that are both modern and rooted in historical value, enabling individuals to diversify their wealth while participating in the growing Web3 economy.
Through these solutions, IPMB seeks to redefine asset ownership in the digital age, making gold investment secure, accessible, and adaptable to the needs of a new generation of investors.
3. What makes IPMB different from other gold token projects like Paxos gold?
George: IPMB stands out from other gold token projects, such as Paxos Gold, through its focus on creating a comprehensive and user-focused ecosystem that leverages blockchain not just for tokenization but to enhance transparency, liquidity, accessibility, and global financial inclusion. Here are some key differentiators:
Two Gold-Backed Tokens:
The major difference between tokens like Paxos Gold and the IPMB Token is that the IPMB Token is not a stablecoin – whilst we have GEM NFTs which are direct exposure to physical gold and therefore a ‘StableNFT’, the IPMB Token is not despite being fully backed by gold. Each IPMB Token is backed by 1 gram of gold (Worth $90 at time of time of writing)
IPMB Token
With the IPMB Token we have created an asset which is floored by the price of gold – this is because we guarantee minimum 1:1 conversion to GEM NFTs. For example, If the IPMB Token was trading at $20 (well below the market price of gold) a user could stake their Tokens and redeem 1:1 conversion to GEM.
In Principal this looks like this – User buys 100 IPMB Tokens worth $20 each – $2000 total. They can then stake their 100 Tokens to unlock our 1:1 guarantee, and receive a GEM100 (100 grams of gold) worth $9000.
This creates an arbitrage opportunity for traders which in market theory would will create buy pressure for the IPMB Token anytime it trades below the price of gold.
The price of IPMB can also develop a premium as the utility of the token grows – this is why we opted not to create a stablecoin.
IPMB is currently building a web3 marketplace where users will be able to use IPMB Tokens to buy goods and services at a discounted price when using the IPMB Token, adding to the utility of the token and therefore creating more value which could cause the price to decouple and rise above the price of gold.
GEM NFT
GEM NFTs are a product which provide the most affordable gold ownership option in the market.
Each GEM NFT is directly allocated to a 24-carat gold bar or coin – all of the underlying gold can be redeemed by the holder. Redemption is free for amounts over 100 grams, below this the user only pays the delivery charges. Delivery is only available 12 months after a GEM NFT has been minted and KYC has be passed.
GEM NFTs are essentially digital certificates that prove ownership of physical gold.
GEM NFTs can be obtained at a discount when staking IPMB Tokens, the discount can reach up to 11% – basically an 11% discount on Physical Gold.
Here is how this process works in a timeline.
Year 0 – User can buy IPMB Tokens and enter a staking contract for 12 months.
Year 1 – The Staking Contract matures, and the user can convert his IPMB Tokens into a GEM NFT, unlocking an 11% in the process.
Year 2 – The GEM NFT held by the user can be redeemed into physical gold.
2. End-to-End Transparency and Proof of Reserves:
While Paxos Gold and other projects are transparent about the reserves backing their tokens, IPMB places an enhanced emphasis on full visibility into gold custody, sourcing, and auditing processes through its proprietary GoldTrace360 traceability platform. IPMB aims to offer token holders real-time proof of reserves and tracking, allowing users to verify the physical gold backing their tokens. This enhanced level of transparency is core to IPMB’s mission of building trust within the gold investment community and ensuring all gold holdings are verified and accessible for audit.
3. Blockchain-Optimised Liquidity Solutions:
IPMB has built in a strong focus on providing liquidity and flexibility for gold-backed tokens, particularly for decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. IPMB aims to ensure that token holders may seamlessly leverage their gold-backed assets within DeFi platforms, including collateralized loans and yield-generating opportunities, with minimal fees and streamlined processes. This focus on DeFi integration and on-chain liquidity differentiates IPMB from projects like Paxos Gold, which is more limited to specific platforms and exchanges.
4. Strong Emphasis on Security and Compliance:
Security and regulatory compliance are paramount for IPMB. The platform is designed to meet rigorous security standards and ensure compliance with international regulations. This includes high standards for secure custody, anti-money laundering (AML), and know-your-customer (KYC) processes, fostering a safe and compliant environment that builds confidence in investors and institutions alike.
5. Enhanced Global Reach and Partnerships:
IPMB aims to establish strategic partnerships with global financial institutions, exchanges, and blockchain platforms, allowing for seamless cross-platform functionality. This helps broaden IPMB’s reach beyond typical crypto users and into more traditional financial markets, making it accessible to a diverse audience of investors and providing more avenues for liquidity and utilisation of gold-backed assets.
6. User-Centric Features and Education:
IPMB places a strong emphasis on user education and accessibility. The platform aims to provide resources and educational tools to help our community understand the benefits of gold tokenization, how blockchain secures and verifies ownership, and the best practices for integrating gold-backed assets into diverse portfolios. This commitment to token holder knowledge and empowerment is designed to set IPMB apart in the rapidly growing Web3 ecosystem.
IPMB’s model goes beyond simple tokenization by offering comprehensive transparency, DeFi integration, financial accessibility, and robust compliance, providing a holistic approach to gold investment in the digital age. This broad range of benefits and emphasis on accessibility makes IPMB a differentiated and innovative choice for gold bugs looking to bridge traditional assets with blockchain technology, and aims to develop a comprehensive banking ecosystem based on a modern gold standard.

4. How does Gold and BTC complement rather than compete with each other?
George: Gold and Bitcoin (BTC) complement each other in a portfolio because they serve different, yet mutually beneficial, roles in wealth preservation and investment strategies. Here’s how they work together:
1. Diversification of Safe-Haven Assets:
- Gold has a long history as a safe-haven asset, known for its stability, especially during market downturns, inflation, or geopolitical instability. It’s widely recognized by traditional markets and provides a counterbalance to equity and fiat currency risks.
- Bitcoin offers a digital hedge against inflation and fiat currency devaluation, often referred to as “digital gold” due to its limited supply (capped at 21 million BTC) and decentralized nature. Its role as an anti-inflationary asset attracts investors seeking to diversify away from fiat currency exposure.
Together, holding both assets can reduce risk and provide broader protection against economic uncertainties, combining the established stability of gold with the high-growth, hedge potential of Bitcoin.
2. Balancing Stability with Growth Potential:
- Gold is generally less volatile and provides stability, making it ideal for wealth preservation. Its prices are less subject to extreme fluctuations, which makes it reliable for conservative investors focused on long-term value retention.
- Bitcoin, on the other hand, has shown considerable growth potential, especially as adoption and infrastructure around cryptocurrencies continue to expand. Although it’s more volatile, Bitcoin appeals to investors seeking high returns, while recognizing the risk that comes with digital assets.
Combining gold and Bitcoin offers a balance, allowing for both stability and the potential for higher returns within a single portfolio.
3. Hedging Against Different Economic Risks:
- Gold tends to perform well during inflationary periods, economic recessions, and when confidence in traditional financial systems wanes. It acts as a counterbalance during periods of fiat currency devaluation.
- Bitcoin, however, is increasingly seen as a hedge against currency debasement, especially in countries with volatile currencies. It also benefits from digital innovation and offers a store of value in a decentralized, global form that’s separate from government control, making it a unique hedge against systemic and technological risks.
This complementary hedging function helps protect a portfolio from a wider array of economic scenarios.
4. Appealing to Different Investor Types:
- Gold has universal appeal across both traditional and modern investors, especially those focused on wealth preservation. It’s highly liquid and widely accepted across global markets, making it an easy choice for conservative and institutional investors.
- Bitcoin appeals to tech-savvy investors, younger generations, and those who believe in decentralization and the future of digital assets. It also attracts those looking to gain exposure to innovative financial technology.
Having both assets accommodates diverse investor types and preferences, creating a more adaptable portfolio.
5. Portfolio Resilience and Flexibility:
- Gold provides stability that can help cushion a portfolio during Bitcoin’s volatile periods, making it easier for investors to handle risk and hold onto Bitcoin through its market fluctuations.
- Bitcoin brings liquidity and flexibility in the digital realm, where transactions are often faster while remaining the only truly non-confiscatable asset on the market.
The combination of gold and Bitcoin thus allows investors to handle varying market conditions, providing the resilience and flexibility to meet short- and long-term financial goals.
Gold and Bitcoin complement each other as they offer a strategic blend of stability and growth, traditional and digital value, and inflation and currency devaluation hedges. By holding both, investors can achieve a diversified and robust portfolio that is better equipped for a range of economic environments, combining gold’s established reliability with Bitcoin’s potential for innovation and growth.
5. What are the benefits of gold over other assets like stocks, bonds and holding fiat in a bank account?
George: Gold offers several unique advantages over assets like stocks, bonds, and fiat currency, making it an attractive choice for investors looking to diversify and protect their wealth. Here are the key benefits:
1. Inflation Hedge:
- Gold has historically served as a hedge against inflation. When the purchasing power of fiat currencies decreases due to inflation, gold’s value tends to hold steady or even increase, preserving wealth over the long term.
- Stocks, bonds, and fiat currency are more vulnerable to inflation. Stocks can sometimes adjust to inflation, but not all sectors benefit, and bond yields often fall behind inflation rates, eroding real returns.
2. Stability and Wealth Preservation:
- Gold is less volatile than stocks and crypto, offering a stable store of value with low correlation to other asset classes. It’s known for retaining its intrinsic value over millennia, making it an ideal asset for wealth preservation.
- Stocks can experience significant volatility based on market conditions, economic cycles, or individual company performance. Bonds also fluctuate, particularly in times of interest rate changes, while fiat currency loses purchasing power over time due to inflation.
3. Safe-Haven Asset:
- During economic or geopolitical crises, gold often experiences demand surges, as investors seek safe-haven assets. It typically performs well during financial downturns, making it an effective diversification tool for uncertain times.
- Stocks and bonds can suffer during downturns, as they’re tied to the economy’s health and company earnings. Fiat currency, though often seen as a safe option, is vulnerable to currency depreciation or even bank instability in extreme cases.
4. No Counterparty Risk:
- Gold has no counterparty risk because it’s a physical asset with intrinsic value. Owning gold outright doesn’t depend on any institution’s solvency, unlike holding money in a bank or investing in stocks, where you rely on the financial health of the company or institution.
- Bonds involve counterparty risk as they depend on the issuer’s ability to repay debt. Stocks depend on company performance, while fiat in banks may be protected by government insurance but remains at risk of value loss due to economic factors.
5. Global Liquidity:
- Gold is recognized and traded globally, offering high liquidity in nearly every market worldwide. This makes it easy to convert into cash without major price reductions or fees.
- Stocks and bonds are also liquid but can be subject to market hours, trading fees, and, in some cases, significant fluctuations that impact their sale value. Fiat in a bank is generally liquid but may be subject to withdrawal limits or, in certain countries, restrictions on accessing funds and even deposit haircuts.
6. Portfolio Diversification:
- Adding gold to a portfolio of stocks, bonds, or fiat-based investments provides diversification, as gold’s price movements often differ from other assets. This non-correlation means that when other assets face downward trends, gold may hold its value or even appreciate, balancing the portfolio.
- Stocks, bonds, and fiat typically move more in sync with the broader economy, so having only these can make a portfolio more susceptible to economic downturns.
7. Tangible Asset with Intrinsic Value:
- Gold is a tangible, finite resource, with inherent value due to its scarcity, cultural significance, and industrial use. Its physical form adds psychological and practical security for investors.
- Stocks and bonds represent claims on future earnings, and fiat currency is based on government backing, meaning their value relies on institutional and market confidence rather than intrinsic qualities.
8. Protection Against Currency Depreciation:
- Gold can act as a hedge against fiat currency devaluation, especially in cases of severe monetary policies or high government debt. As fiat loses value, gold often increases in response.
- Fiat currency, on the other hand, continuously faces devaluation risks, especially with expanding money supplies and economic instability. Stocks and bonds are also affected by currency fluctuations, as their value is denominated in fiat terms.
Gold provides a unique combination of stability, intrinsic value, and protection against economic and market-related risks, making it an effective complement to other investments like stocks, bonds, and fiat holdings. By including gold, investors can achieve better wealth preservation, hedging, and diversification, making their portfolios more resilient to various economic conditions.
6. How does gold compare to other precious metals or commodities as an investment?
George: Gold holds unique advantages over other precious metals and commodities, making it a preferred choice for many investors seeking stability and wealth preservation. Here’s a comparison:
1. Historical and Cultural Value:
- Gold has been valued for thousands of years as a symbol of wealth, a form of currency, and a safe haven in times of economic uncertainty. Its established role as a store of value and means of wealth preservation gives it a unique appeal and trust that few other commodities have.
- Other precious metals like silver, platinum, and palladium also have historical and monetary significance but are primarily valued today for their industrial uses, making them more susceptible to demand fluctuations tied to specific sectors, such as electronics or automotive.
2. Liquidity and Market Demand:
- Gold is one of the most liquid commodities globally, with a vast market of institutional and individual investors. Its demand is consistently strong in various forms, including bars, coins, jewellery, and investment vehicles like ETFs.
- Silver is also highly liquid and has widespread applications, but it tends to be more volatile and is often seen as “gold’s little brother,” lacking the same depth of investor confidence. Platinum and palladium have smaller markets and less liquidity, making them more challenging to trade and often resulting in wider bid-ask spreads.
3. Volatility and Price Stability:
- Gold has lower volatility compared to most other precious metals and commodities. Its price stability stems from its dual nature as both an industrial metal and a safe-haven asset, offering a unique balance of demand factors.
- Silver is more volatile, as it’s driven heavily by industrial demand, which rises and falls with the health of sectors like technology and solar energy. Platinum and palladium are even more volatile, primarily due to their reliance on automotive demand, particularly for catalytic converters.
4. Correlation with Economic Conditions:
- Gold often behaves as an inverse hedge against economic downturns, inflation, and currency depreciation. This makes it particularly appealing in portfolios aiming for diversification against economic instability.
- Other precious metals like silver, platinum, and palladium don’t exhibit as strong an inverse correlation with economic conditions. Their prices can be impacted more by industrial demand and supply factors. For instance, when automotive demand drops, platinum and palladium prices may also decrease, regardless of economic uncertainty.
5. Industrial vs. Investment Demand:
- Gold’s demand is fairly balanced between investment (as a safe-haven asset) and consumption (in jewellery, electronics, etc.). This balance helps keep its demand steady.
- Silver is used heavily in electronics, solar technology, and other industrial applications, meaning its price often reflects shifts in industrial demand. Platinum and palladium are almost entirely dependent on industrial demand, making them more susceptible to shifts in specific industries, like automotive, and less reliable as stores of value.
6. Supply Constraints and Geopolitical Factors:
- Gold’s supply is relatively stable, and its global market reduces the impact of localised supply issues. It is mined in various regions, with a continuous supply flow that helps stabilise its price.
- Platinum and palladium are heavily concentrated in a few regions, particularly South Africa and Russia. This geographical concentration makes them vulnerable to supply disruptions due to geopolitical or environmental factors. Silver is more globally distributed but still more susceptible to supply swings than gold.
7. Storage and Ownership:
- Gold is widely accepted and stored as a physical asset, with a large infrastructure supporting gold vaulting, custody, and ownership transfer. It’s easier for investors to own, store, and trade physical gold compared to many other commodities.
- While physical silver can also be owned, it requires more storage space due to its lower value-to-weight ratio, and its storage costs are higher relative to gold. Platinum and palladium are less commonly held by retail investors in physical form due to their higher price volatility and smaller investor base.
8. Role in Portfolios:
- Gold is known for its role in portfolio diversification, often reducing overall portfolio risk due to its low or negative correlation with stocks and bonds. Many investors view gold as essential for balancing risk and preserving wealth.
- Other precious metals and commodities can also offer diversification benefits but are usually considered higher-risk and more volatile. They may play a supplementary role in portfolios, but gold remains the primary choice for those prioritising wealth preservation and inflation protection.
Gold’s unique combination of stability, liquidity, and historical trust sets it apart from other precious metals and commodities. It acts as both a financial safe haven and a hedge against economic uncertainty, making it the preferred choice for long-term wealth preservation. Other commodities can diversify and add growth potential but lack gold’s reliability and historical role as a stable asset.

7. How does gold typically perform during times of inflation or economic downturn?
George: Gold has a strong track record as a safe-haven asset during times of inflation and economic downturns. Here’s how it typically performs in these scenarios:
1. Inflation Hedge:
- Protects Purchasing Power: Gold historically retains its value when the purchasing power of fiat currencies declines. During inflationary periods, central banks may increase the money supply or lower interest rates, which can erode fiat currency value. Gold, on the other hand, often appreciates as investors seek assets that are less affected by currency devaluation.
- High Demand as a Real Asset: Inflation drives demand for “real assets” like gold that have intrinsic value. Gold’s finite supply and universal acceptance make it a reliable store of value when inflation is high, contrasting with fiat currencies, which lose value as inflation rises.
2. Economic Downturns and Recession:
- Safe-Haven Asset: During economic downturns, investors turn to gold for stability, as it’s less correlated with traditional financial markets. When stocks, bonds, or other assets decline due to recession fears, gold often holds steady or appreciates, providing a buffer in a diversified portfolio.
- Capital Preservation: As consumer confidence and business investments decline in recessions, demand for gold increases due to its reputation as a “safe” asset that preserves capital. Investors seeking to protect wealth from market declines often flock to gold, which can drive up its price.
3. Historical Performance:
- 1970s Stagflation: During the 1970s, the U.S. experienced high inflation and stagnant economic growth. Gold prices surged, rising from around $35 per ounce in 1971 to over $800 per ounce by 1980, reflecting its role as a hedge in a high-inflation environment.
- 2008 Financial Crisis: Gold performed strongly during the 2008 financial crisis. As stocks and real estate prices collapsed, investors turned to gold, pushing its price higher as a safe-haven asset.
- 2020 COVID19 Recession: In 2020, gold hit record highs as economic uncertainty and central bank interventions increased. The demand for gold rose as a response to the global recession, low-interest rates, and fears of currency debasement.
4. Comparison with Other Assets:
- Outperforming Fiat Currency: Unlike fiat currency, which loses purchasing power during inflation, gold maintains or increases its value, making it attractive to those looking to preserve wealth.
- Low Correlation with Equities: Gold’s price movements often differ from those of stocks, bonds, and real estate. This low correlation makes gold an effective portfolio diversifier, providing stability when other asset classes experience declines.
5. Protection Against Low or Negative Interest Rates:
- During economic downturns, central banks may implement low or even negative interest rates to stimulate growth. In these scenarios, holding fiat currency or bonds becomes less attractive due to diminished returns. Gold, which doesn’t rely on interest, becomes a more appealing asset as a store of value.
Gold typically performs well during inflation and economic downturns because it acts as a hedge against currency devaluation, offers stability in volatile markets, and is viewed as a reliable store of value. Its historical resilience and low correlation with other assets make it a valuable tool for diversifying and preserving wealth through economic uncertainty.
8. What is GEM NFT, and why is it the best medium for modern-day gold ownership?
George: GEM NFT (Globally Exchanged Metals Non-Fungible Token) is a digital asset that represents ownership of physical gold, combining the benefits of blockchain technology with the stability of gold as a real-world asset. Here’s why GEM NFTs are considered the best medium for modern-day gold ownership:
